Governance Policy
A leader leads people in the direction that they want to go and after 30 years of poor governance this country hasn’t been led anywhere, instead politicians are followers of social trends and they try and outdo each other by offering more of the same, whether that be planting more trees or offering more equality.
Many politicians are career-driven, with experience in journalism or law, some simply join politics after university and have little experience outside of politics.
I believe that politicians should be people whom we can look up to and they should hold themselves to a higher standard than most, unfortunately there have been many scandals and cases of unprofessional behaviour, this is also a hard issue for government to tackle as it is really an issue of party discipline.
Devolution Referendum
Devolution in Scotland has allowed a minor single-issue party to gain in popularity and form government.
Scotland has a drugs death epidemic, health and education have declined whilst the Scottish government is distracted with it’s obsessive focus on independence.
Politicians can make decision that ruin people’s lives, so ideally we need a society with less politicians not more and it’s important that these leaders are wise professionals with experience.
Increasingly, especially in Scotland, people are entering elected office after only a few years since university with little or no experience.
I believe that overall the negatives of devolution outweigh the benefits and people need to be asked in hindsight was devolution worth it?
Human Rights Declaration Bill
We will introduce a Human Rights Declaration Bill into parliament which will replace the current Human Rights Act.
As Britain repositions itself on the global stage, we feel that this is the right course of action to truly reflect 'Global Britain'.
The Human Rights Art is based on the European Convention of Human Rights, this new Bill will be based on the UN Declaration of Human Right.
House of Lords Reform
I believe the two Houses of Parliament should be separate and there should be a process for removing the peerage of those who are found guilty of crimes.
MPs from the House of Commons should not be able to appoint Peers to the House of Lords.
The Labour party has announced plans to abolish the House of Lords (including expanding devolution), but the House of Lords is not the problem, all of the bad decisions over the past 30 years have been made by politicians in the House of Commons and many of the more controversial Peers, such as Lord Lebedev mentioned in the article, were appointed by previous Prime Ministers who sit in the House of Commons.
The recent scandal of Michelle Mone again highlights the need for the House of Commons to be separated from the House of Lords.
Baroness Mone was appointed a life peerage by David Cameron in 2015 and I believe that MPs from the House of Commons should not be allowed to appoint members of the House of Lords.
The House of Lords is a unique characteristic of this country and is also close to the monarchy, abolishing the House of Lords is one step away from abolishing the monarchy.
Instead of abolishing the House of Lords, the government should separate the two houses by preventing future Prime Ministers from appointing members to the House of Lords.
Social Media Restrictions for Politicians
Politicians should be examples for the rest of society, at the least Social Media is a waste of time and at it’s worst it is a serious behavioral addiction, as such politicians should set an example by restricting their use of it. However, in some forms Social Media can be a legitimate method of broadcast communication.
I believe that new regulations should be introduced that clearly specify legitimate uses of Social Media for politicians and prohibit its over-use. Politicians should be banned from having personal accounts but rather they should use ‘office’ accounts.
